Contents:

The course Forest Economics will be based on Johansson & Löfgren (1985). Lohmander concentrates on economic optimization and risk and uncertainty. Ole Hofstad and Hans Fredrik Hoen will give lectures on the parts not covered by Lohmander. Since the field of risk and uncertainty with applications to forest economic optimisation has developed since 1985 when Johansson & Löfgren published their book, more recent developments will also be included in the lectures by Lohmander. Before the course, Lohmander prepares a case study to be analysed during the course. This case study will focus on the issues treated during the lectures.

References:

The following book is very good but not absolutely necessary:

Winston, W.L., Operations Research, Applications and Algorithms, Duxbury Press, International Thomson Publishing, 3.ed., 1994, ISBN 0-534-20971-8

During the course, approaches and references connected to the chapters in Johansson and Löfgren (1985) will sequentially be discussed.

Practical issues:

The lectures by Lohmander should be given in a lecture room with a large, preferably at least 3 meter wide and 1.5 meter high, whiteboard. The quality of the lectures drops considerably if the whiteboard is too small.

Before the course, Lohmander prepares a case study to be analysed during the course. This case study will focus on the issues treated during the lectures. It will be necessary to solve some numerical problems of this case study with PCs and the best way to do this is with VBScript. It is assumed that the course participants will do some of these optimisation exercises during the time between the lectures. VBScript is a very convenient language. Lohmander will give all the necessary background to this during the course. Some of the work can also be done with LINGO in a very efficient and informative manner. See below!

Computers and software:

The course participants should have access to personal computers with Internet Explorer and INTERNET during the time when they are not in the lecture room(s). This is important since VBScript is a very useful tool for exercises, and since VBScript is supported by Internet Explorer.

Here, you find VBScript documentation: Start by looking at Exercises.htm then look for more details at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/script56/html/vtoriVBScript.asp

It is strongly recommended that the following software be installed on the personal computers before the course starts:

LINGO (A free sample version (with sufficient options for the course) can be found here: http://www.LINDO.com

EXCEL

Some general programming software which is already known by the course participants (such as Fortran, Basic, Pascal, C, C++, or Java)

Some forest economics problems and optimisation software are found here:
